(In order of appearance)

There is so much that goes into the production of Pop Danthologies. Below is a pie chart that shows the breakdown of all the work I did for Pop Danthology 2013.

Pop Danthology 2013 Pie Chart

The first and least exciting part of making Pop Danthology is gathering all the different instrumental and acapella tracks, audio stems, and full songs. I search all over the internet like a determined chef searches different markets and grocery stores for his ingredients. Mashup artists such as myself, however, are “chefs” who live in a world of many deceitful grocery stores that mislabel their produce as “fresh” and “organic” when they really are far from those descriptions. I am one “chef” who will not be deceived. I instead take the time to visit every “grocery store” in order to get ingredients of the highest quality. This year, I felt that there was a shortage of high quality audio parts compared to previous years. Nevertheless, after 33 hours, I was able to compile a ready-to-mix list of 179 (73 vocal, 41 instrumental, 65 complete with both) music files.

Pop Danthology 2013 Song List

A lot of planning is required in the making of Pop Danthology because not all songs fit nicely into one stationary tempo and key (many other mashup artists do this but it distorts the sound quality and timbre of the original audio parts too much for my liking). In order to determine what keys to use in Pop Danthology, I draw up a chart like the one below.

Pop Danthology 2013 Key Chart[ the numbers above refer to the number of songs in that key ]

This key chart shows me that this year’s music, like many of the previous years’ music, is all over the place; there is no one key being predominantly used. I, therefore, had no choice but to use multiple key changes in this year’s Pop Danthology. The tempos of all the music this year were all over the place too. I had to use a total of 11 tempo changes in Pop Danthology 2013.

Pop Danthology 2013 Tempo[ This is Pop Danthology 2013’s tempo graph showing all the fluctuations in tempo from the beginning (left side) to the very end (right side) of the mix ]

I spent a total of 9 hours planning and organizing Pop Danthology 2013.

The fun part began only after investing 42 hours into this epic project (talk about delayed gratification, huh?). This is the part I get to combine all the different sounds together to make new sounds. I spent a total of 114 hours arranging and mixing Pop Danthology 2013. A lot of that time, though, was spent just listening to my progress at full volume and dancing as if I was hearing it at a DJ concert. It is also during this part of the mashup making process that the only music I listen to, on loop, is my work in progress. Even while driving my car from one place to another, I examine all the volumes and frequencies of each individual audio part with a critical ear.

Pop Danthology 2013 Arrangement

[ Arranging my music on Logic Pro X ]

Unlike the music portion of the mashup making process, it is so much easier to find the official music videos to all the songs used in Pop Danthology. All it took was 1 hour of simple YouTube searches.

Editing the music video was so easy as well. All I really had to do was find the video clips matching the audio parts featured in Pop Danthology 2013 and then stretch or compress them by the same percentage that the audio parts were stretched/compressed. I do spend the extra time, though, to carefully select video clips that are appropriate for all ages. I spent 23 hours editing Pop Danthology 2013.

Van Damme VS Dan

This year I decided to make a parody of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s viral Volvo commercial as my video intro. I could not have done this part without the help of:

Justin Lam (Lighting, Equipment)

Steve Tan (Editor/Compositor)

  34. Jessica says:

I thought you were giving more time for any Demi Lovato’s song (like the song Neon Lights and Heart Attack). It was like 2 seconds of Heart Attack, however, you work so hard in this kind of thing, and the video is amazing, congratz!

  35. Never fails to exceed our expectation. this is too awesome Daniel.

  47. César says:

    Where’s katy perry???? =(

    • Jake "JJR" Rivera says:

Come on, man. Katy Perry is the VERY FIRST VOICE heard in the WHOLE ENTIRE THING; lyrics from her song “Roar”. Need you accuse Daniel Kim for not doing something when it’s something he actually did do? I think not!

  48. weetzdom says:

    Total Respect!!!!!

  49. itaygnr says:

Wow! Great job, I’m really like that!!

  50. Menahil says:

I’ve been waiting for this mashup for a long time and you did not disappoint. That looks like a lot of hard work. Thank you 🙂

    It takes:

    1) an OCPDer to do this, and
    2) a Daniel Kim

Thank you so much for how you choose to spend your time, doing what you do, when you do and the way you do it. We are unbelievably grateful that you chose to see and value the limitless gifts of your trait. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to sign off to get my groove back on..Pop Danthology 2013 is going to be looping through my next few days..

  55. LukeeeSkywalker says:

I think there are at least two Ellie Goulding songs in this Mash-up. At the end it is “Burn“ like mentioned below, in the beginning there is a second song pared with the bed scene. Not sure which song it is.

  56. chymerikaen says:

This is the best yet! Amazing mashup- you’ve really blended the lyrics, melodies, and rhythms seamlessly. I actually prefer this to listening to some of the songs full length. Truly masterfully done.

  57. mayra says:

    omg genius!!!

  71. Tom says:

what a great mashup i love it much better than DJ Earworm!

  72. Lucas Marcon says:

    missed Paramore on this Mashup

    • Jake "JJR" Rivera says:

Not to worry. Paramore’s lead singer Hayley Williams is featured on Zedd’s “Stay The Night”, which is heard in this mashup after the “Give It 2 U/Work B****” combo.

  73. Javi says:

    So good! congratulations 🙂

  74. Julia says:

Thanks so much for all of your work – you deserve thousands of more shoutouts, as I’m sure everyone was eagerly waiting for this as well!

  75. priya says:

It’s amazing but i missed ariana grande on this mashup 😦

    • Jake "JJR" Rivera says:

DJ Earworm didn’t include Ariana Grande in his mashup either. Given Ariana Grande is a Nickelodeon star (on the shows “Victorious” and “Sam and Cat”), I was proud to see that she had a hit song on the radio (I’m referring to “The Way”, of course; she’s had other songs) and I was really hoping that Daniel Kim, if not DJ Earworm, would be nice enough to give her some recognition.

  76. Guetta has NOTHING on you….you should be twice as famous….and wow, I am in awe of your organisational capability!!!!!!!! 🙂

  77. These are amazing. Thank you for showing some of the process you use to make these; it really helps put into perspective how much hard work and science there is behind making the finished, polished piece of art. And you do this annually. That’s amazing. You’re amazing.

  78. Kabraham says:

I really love this version of Suit & Tie !! is the entire song mix available??

  79. Sharon says:

Thanks for all the hard work you put into doing this every year. It sounds AMAZING! Keep it up!

  80. Tiffy says:

    Awesome work!

  81. Where many create yearmixes from 30min to 1 hour or even longer, you do it within 6 minutes. Compliments..

More yearmixes can be found at the source where it all started: Holland .. Enjoy http://www.jaarmix.nl

  82. Lucie says:

You are the BEST, I am desperately waiting for you mashup whole year. Love it!

  95. I appreciate what hard work by doing this year’s pop danthology, actually daniel is one of my idol because he is so great in mixing musics,,,but sorry i have to say this,, this year’s pop danthology is not so awesome and great,, like pop danthology 2012,, i don’t know some music was not emphasize like the 2012 pop danthology, and lastly its too short, just like the pop danthology 2010,,but its okay,, its amazing! 🙂 i wish that the pop danthology 2014 will be the greatest i’m hoping,, thanks 🙂 🙂 🙂

  96. Do you plan on releasing the video for download?

  108. Archidon says:

Hey Daniel Kim, I just want to say great job and i hope you will continue making more mash-ups for us in future, keep it up man it gets more awesome every year.

    • Archidon says:

And I think I speak for alot of people when i say “We appreciate your work and all the time and effort you’ve put into your works.”

  109. girlfriend says:

Hey there! I know this is sort of off-topic however I
needed to ask. Does operating a well-established
website such as yours require a lot of work? I am completely new to running a blog however I do
write in my journal everyday. I’d like to start a blog
so I can share my personal experience and feelings online.
Please let me know if you have any kind of ideas or
tips for brand new aspiring blog owners. Appreciate it!

  110. Alex says:

What do you call the 3:15 minute song? is country type

    • Jake "JJR" Rivera says:

The singing is from “Hey Now” by Martin Solveig, The Cataracs, and Kyle. The harmonica bit (supposedly the song you’re looking for; I couldn’t tell if you were looking for the singing or the instrumental) is from “Timber” by Pitbull & Ke$ha.

FUN FACT: That harmonica bit from “Timber” was sampled from “San Francisco Bay” by War.

  111. Trevor Ramsey says:

I have never really enjoyed mash-ups until I stumbled upon your “Danthology.” Now I listen to it over-and-over. I’d love to hear about where you’re headed and when to expect an album on Spotify maybe?

    Also a gifted O-CPD,

  115. Tunes guy says:

Ludicrously amazing! Can’t stop listening! Thanks much!

  116. Steven says:

    OMG This is FANTASTIC!!!
Daniel could you please make a mashup for epic songs for very famous singers/groups?? (esp. before 2010 like Backstreet Boy, Westlife and MJ)

  117. bryteline says:

    Hello Mr. Kim,

I came across your 2013 mashup via buzzfeed, proceeded to listen and watch all four you have released, then headed over to your website to download all four mp3s. I’ve read about the effort you put into these and am grateful to see “behind the curtain” a little.

These are all very listenable tracks. This year’s especially sticks with me; it may sound a little excessive but I’ve played the track upwards of sixty times already because it is amazingly catchy. Your remixing skills are exceptional and you’ve found some really amazing conversations between these disparate songs.

The moments that especially stand out to me are the transition at 0:55-1:12, the back-and-forth at 1:55-2:23, and the slow-down from 3:55 to the end.

Thanks again for the work you put into these. It certainly resulted in a phenomenal work of art.

  118. Gen says:

GUys can someone tell me what is the song from 3.06 to 3.09?

  119. David says:

Thank You so much for your work,Which i use for special occasions. I had your 2012 release for video. Would like to use 2013 if i can find where to purchase video. Also were 2010 and 2011 Videos also. Thanks again for the great work. I know this requires so much time in producing. 🙂

    DJ Dave!

  120. William says:

De primeira vez eu não achei bom mas depois que eu escutei as musicas preferi a versão do Daniel Kim muito bom mesmo!

  121. Marcelo says:

Great mashup! By the way, you should do a loop of you saying “Pop-Dan-Thology”. It’s SO COOL, I can’t stop repeating it HAHAHA. Thanks for giving us amazing mixes, Dan!

  122. kikimarino says:

Daniel kim…the best. Much better than yearmix

  123. Juhi says:

Any chance of being able to meet you in Korea?! 저는 한국 사람 안이데, 한국에서 사라요! 대니엘 김 씨와 같이 만나면 좋겠습니다~

  124. samuel says:

Hey Dan, could you share your song key chart – Because I am trying to make a playlist for new year.

    Best regards,

  125. KI Sung Lim says:

By a chance I heard your whole danthologies on YouTube and I came here. I really like those kinds of mash-ups, really! Can I get the instrumental versions of your Pop Danthology 2012 and 100 sec K-Pop mash-up? Because I’m studying synthesizing and tone-making in these days so I’m really interested in this kind of mixing, and I have to make a freshmen welcome party concert in university. I really appreciate it if you comply with my request. BTW, really good mixing. Sorry for asking through a reply!

    • Jake "JJR" Rivera says:

DJ Cusho released a homemade instrumental version of the mashup that you can listen to. Go on YouTube and search for “DJ Cusho Pop Danthology 2012 Instrumental”. I guarantee it’s what you’re looking for.

  126. The D says:

  140. jmaz says:

I lpve this mashup bit what song was the one with the people in animal masks not tje kesha one a difftent one

    • Jake "JJR" Rivera says:

      “lpve” = “love”
      “bit” = “but”
      “tje” = “the”

I’m not accusing you of not knowing how to spell. I’m just asking you to be more careful with the keys on your keyboard.

Anyway, the song you’re thinking of is “Animals” by Martin Garrix.

FUN FACT: “Animals” contains a sample from “What It Is” by Busta Rhymes/Kelis. That’s where that constant beeping originated from.

  141. Jason Junsu Lee says:

  198. Jake "JJR" Rivera says:

TWO big problems with this mashup.

    1) NO “THRIFT SHOP”!

You HAVE GOT to read this comment, reply, and explain these problems!

These mashups are supposed to have PURE 2013 songs in them! “Thrift Shop” is a PURE 2013 song and should have been featured in this mashup! “Locked Out Of Heaven” is a PURE 2012 song, NOT A PURE 2013 SONG, and therefore SHOULD NOT have been in this mashup!

You HAVE GOT to read this comment, reply, and explain these problems!

  199. haider says:

  203. chaima says:

you are the best man i love your music

  204. Sahid says:

You my man, have some serious skills. I never knew about your videos or seen any of your work before. I was at an Electronic store in NY called P.C. Richardsons (like a smaller best buy) watching a 4K tv, and your video started playing on every other TV around me. I think one of the employees made a youtube playlist for the store, and it was playing on all the TV’s in the store. I was blown away at how incredibly well done the remix was. So much so, that I actually downloaded a notepad app on my phone, just to write down the “Daniel Kim Pop Danthology” at the bottom of the video. I came home and watched it at least 5 more times.

The video works really well all throughout, but there are some parts that blend so perfectly, and harmonize so well, that I feel you could’ve continued them to make their own mixed sound track. The first example of this is between 1:40 – 2:23. The mash-up of Rihanna + Applause + Scream & Shout + Let her go + Clarity works incredibly well. Hats off to you for putting those together in that particular order. The second example of this is at 3:30, where wrecking ball + Locked out of Heaven blends perfectly. I would’ve never caught the similarities unless I heard them right after each other, and they work so well.

I normally don’t post comments on anything, and I know you got millions of views on the video so this comments probably won’t even matter, but just know that the hard work and time you invested in this is definitely noticed and appreciated by others, especially other creatives who knows the amount of work that can go into something like this. Hope you continue with your creative journey, and continue making amazing mash ups in the future.

  205. Luis Rodriguez says:
